Abstract

Prakriti (human constitution) is sum total of morphological, physiological and psychological traits in human beings. It is decided in intra uterine life according to predominance of Dosha (humour i.e. Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and never can be changed throughout life. It could be a deciding factor during prognosis and treatment of diseases. It is important to observe that in reference to Prakriti determination, ancient Ayurvedic scholars consistently stressed upon positive features of Dosha in their subtle details to reach at a Prakriti determination through their direct observation in an individual. The importance of Prakriti of the patients for a physician has been greatly emphasized in Ayurveda. It is not merely a diagnostic tool but also a guide to action for good health. Information extracted from various Ayurvedic classics i.e. Brihattrayi (Charaka, Sushruta, Ashtanga Hridaya and Ashtanga Sangraha), other treatise and relevant articles were taken from Pubmed, Scopemed, Dhara online database and other allied databases were taken into study for the review. It is comprehensive in scope, spanning both physical and mental aspect.
