Abstract

Sickle cell disease is found to be widespread throughout the World. Sickle cell disease has been found in almost 12 Indian states and one Union territory and its prevalence rate was found to be highest in Central India. Melghat region is in Maharashtra where majority of population belong to tribal Community.

In the present study about 392 persons were willing to be screened were selected for the sickle cell screening test.The oral consent were given by the participating individual. Out of the 392 persons the blood examination of about 271 patients were found to be sickling test positive. The blood of these persons was subjected to further confirmatory test for sickle cell disease.

Out of the 271 blood samples subjected to haemoglobin electrophoresis total 135 persons were reported to be sickiling test positive. 77 individuals showed an haemoglobin band pattern of ‘AS’ type. These individuals are the potent carriers of the sickle cell gene. 58 blood samples after electrophoresis were found to exhibit the SS band pattern. Haematological analysis: Haemoglobin level, white blood cell count, level of lymphocytes, monocyte count, haematocrit (HCT) value, mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) has been studied.

Biochemical analysis: The total bilirubin levels, serum urea, creatinine levels, Alkaline Phosphatase and serum Na+ & K+ level has been studied.

Statistical Analysis: The correlation between Hb gm % and all hematological and biochemical parameters has been established.

The correlation between Hb and all hematological and biochemical parameters had been established. It had been found that a positive correlation in RBC (Red Blood Corpuscles), WBC(White Blood Corpuscles), Lymphocytes, Haematocrit, MCV, and MCH while the rest of the parameters were insignificant.
